As a visiting scholar at University at Texas at Austin through 1993, Frøitland specialized through taking courses at the mechanical engineering department at the university, within control system in space Engineering, optimized orbits for rockets and three courses in mathematical modeling techniques.


Frøitland received MISWACO`s President Award, Houston 2002. The price bases his development of the Virtual Hydraulics surge/swab module. This software is by many considered as the most recognized available on the market at that time.

Frøitland experience within artificial intelligence; an expert system is a computer system that emulates the decision-making ability of a human expert, bases from MISWACO. An expert system is a software program that bases in artificial intelligence (AI), includes machine learning algorithm and human experience.

OptiBridge, particle bridging using calcium carbonate particle sized distributions (PSDs). Optibridge calculates optimal particle distribution, needed to prevent lost circulation in sandstone reservoirs to prevent formation damage. OptiBridge from MISWACO selects the perfect blend with the right particle distribution size to minimize fluid loss to the formation. It solves through a tensor approach, using a Simplex algorithm.

SafeTherm ST simulates shut-in temperature profiles for insulation fluids used in deep water drilling to estimate static downhole pressures through production shut down. Hydrate formation at low temperatures and high pressures can cause blockages in the production line.

Virtual Hydraulics, estimates downhole ESD, ECD and pressure, through drilling, tripping and circulation operations.  Virtual Hydraulics was MISWACO's dollar software through sale and planning of oil wells. It was MISWACO's most important software planning tool for deep water wells.  

    Liner drilling and Coiled tubing drilling are both modules within Virtual Hydraulics. Liner drilling is mainly used as a tool to prevent borehole collapse in depleted reservoirs. Coiled tubing drilling is used in conjunction with a MWD or a PWD tool and downhole motor, for slim-hole drilling.


DPro is a module in Virtual Hydraulics that estimates downhole equivalent static density (ESD) for both water-based, oil-based and synthetic drilling or reservoir drill-in fluids at different temperature profiles during deep water drilling. The pressure profiles depend on the water temperature profile. Simulated downhole pressure and measured downhole pressure were spot-on.

Virtual CF, displacement of drilling fluids with completion fluids in deep water. Virtual Completion Fluids estimates pill-volume sizes, detergent concentrations and circulation times during displacement of drilling fluid to completion fluid..

PressPro RT, real-time downhole pressure during drilling, circulation, tripping, liner drilling and coiled tubing drilling. Today, PressPro RT is used to monitor offshore drilling operations at an operations center. Early development of PressPro RT took place in the North Sea, bases mainly preventing borehole collapse or stuck pipe. Using MISWACO's PressPro RT, the operator quickly learned how to drill the well without the risk of stuck pipe or fluid loss to the formation.

Ph.D Thor S. Frøitland has a Ph.D. degree in petroleum engineering, from Ålborg Universitet, Denmark and Stavanger University, Norway. Title: "Method for Cost Optimized Drilling", 1996. His specialty is mathematical-, physical modelling and software development within drilling fluids.

His specialty is first mathematics, and he has read about 170 math books on master's, Ph.D. and higher levels. Frøitland has taken mostly all courses in numerical- and applied mathematics at Stavanger University.
